A monument to perished soldiers will be opened in Vietnam.

At the former naval Kamran base in Vietnam a monument to perished Soviet and Russian soldiers will be built.

The monument to Russian and Vietnamese soldiers who gave their lives for peace and stability in the region is supposed to be set up on the territory of the new civil airport at Kamran. Construction of the airport will begin this year.

Works on eternizing memory of Soviet and Russian citizens who gave their lives during service and work in Vietnam began in 2004 on the initiative of Russian-Vietnamese oil-producing joint venture Vietsovpetro financing this project.

To implement the project a joint committee was established. The committee consists of Russian and Vietnamese employees of the Joint Venture (some of them had done military service at Kamran base), Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Hochiminh and representative office of Zarubezhneft in Vungtau in the South of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

A model of the memorial was officially presented on Tuesday in Hochiminh, the joint committee informed ITAR-TASS. The architectural composition will include a monument and memorial plates bearing the names of all those who perished during 1972-2002, when the base at Kamran was jointly used by Russia and Vietnam.

The first memorial sign in honor of perished in Vietnam Soviet and Vietnamese citizens appeared at the military aerodrome of Kamran in 2001. The self-made obelisk was set up by militaries of the Russian garrison that was based there at that time.

However, when Russian military contingent left, the memorial virtually fell into disrepair and could simply vanish. Thanks to the joint committee’ efforts, the obelisk was repaired and reconstructed. Last year the ceremony of laying wreaths to the memorial sign became a tradition. The ceremony is held in the beginning of May and dates the celebration of anniversaries of the victories of the Russian and Vietnamese peoples in the Great Patriotic War and the Vietnam War.
